José Oiticica Filho

In 2014/2015 I did post-doc research at the Art History Institute of the Freie Universität Berlin on Brazilian and German Photography in the 1950s.

Some of this work can be checked out here:

George Huebner

My PhD research was about the Amazonian photography of George Huebner, a German who emigrated to Manaus in the end of the 19th century.

Parintins

For eight years I researched the Amazonian Parintins Festival. In 2004 I concluded a Masters dissertation on the rivalry between the two groups that promote this festival: red Garantido and blue Caprichoso.

I published three books on the subject.

Hélio Oiticica

I was a student, friend and collaborator of Brazilian artist Hélio Oiticica (1937-1980). From seven to thirteen years of age, I had painting lessons with him. Four years later, in 1970, when I was studying in Philadelphia, USA, I reconnected with Helio when he started living in New York. This friendship and partnership can be checked out here.

Fotocine

“FOTOCINE - Photography in Cinema”: film venue held in 2011 and 2013, centered on photography as the main protagonist. Exhibited were fiction films from different periods and approaches; documentaries on photographers and photography itself, as well as “photofilms” utilizing exclusively photographs to construct their narrative.
