Notas do deserto /Notes from the desert #1

No início de 2022 fui convidado para ser professor visitante de fotografia e história da arte por três anos na New York University Abu Dhabi - NYU Abu Dhabi. Pego de surpresa, não pensei duas vezes: vamos encarar esse desafio! Foi, na verdade, um presente que recebi para os meus 70 anos que serão celebrados em dezembro com Katia e nossa gata Amy aqui nos Emirados Árabes Unidos.
Desde o começo desse processo muito me impressionaram a eficiência e o cuidado de todas as pessoas com as quais precisei interagir até a chegada há duas semanas e, mais ainda, uma vez instalado aqui. Há muito carinho, simpatia e gentileza - dos seguranças e demais profissionais no Campus, lojistas, taxistas até, claro, colegas acadêmicos.
Abu Dhabi é um dos sete Emirados Árabes. É a capital do país e segunda maior cidade, com aproximadamente 1,5 milhões de habitantes. Dubai, a pouco mais de uma hora de carro daqui, é a mais populosa. Apesar de suas tradições milenares e de sua importância estratégica como centenária rota de comércio, o país é muito jovem. A partir da descoberta do petróleo no final dos anos 1950 e a prospecção em larga escala nas décadas seguintes, os Emirados se uniram sob a liderança e visão de futuro de Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, o “Pai da Nação”.
O projeto da NYU Abu Dhabi iniciou-se em 2007 tornando-se a primeira universidade de elite e abrangendo as artes e humanidades, ciências e engenharia, a ser implantada em Abu Dhabi.
Hoje, a NYU Abu Dhabi é parte importante de um projeto global da NYU, 25a. no ranking das melhores universidades do mundo. No moderno campus inaugurado em 2010 na ilha de Saadyiat, uma das mais de 200 do país, estudam quase 2.000 alunos e alunas de mais de 120 países, sendo 20% dos Emirados. Os 120 idiomas falados espelham a enorme diversidade e os consequentes sentimentos e práticas de inclusão, tolerância e igualdade.
Faz muito calor aqui. Nos meses de verão, entre maio e setembro, as temperaturas chegam a quase 50 graus e com elevados índices de humidade devido à proximidade ao mar. No inverno, dizem, é bem mais agradável. Nossa vida aqui, por enquanto, tem sido principalmente em ambientes fechados, com ar condicionado gelado: em nosso apartamento no campus, nas instalações da Universidade e nos inúmeros e enormes shoppings.
Penso esse calor, no entanto, também como um alto grau de afeto, humanismo e, principalmente, como força motriz e motivadora para o grande desafio que nos aguarda daqui para frente.
In early 2022 I was invited to be a visiting professor of photography and art history for three years at New York University Abu Dhabi - NYU Abu Dhabi. Taken by surprise, I didn’t think twice: let’s take on this challenge! It was, in fact, a gift I received for my 70th birthday that will be celebrated with Katia and our cat Amy in December here in the United Arab Emirates. From the very beginning of this process, I was very impressed by the efficiency and care of all the people with whom I needed to interact until I arrived two weeks ago and, even more, once I was settled here. There is a lot of warmth, politeness, and kindness - from security guards and other professionals on campus, shopkeepers, taxi drivers, and of course up to fellow academics.
Abu Dhabi is one of the seven Arab Emirates. It is the country’s capital and second largest city, with approximately 1.5 million inhabitants. Dubai, just over an hour’s drive away, is the most populous. Despite its millennial traditions and its strategic importance as a centuries-old trade route, the country is very young. From the discovery of oil in the late 1950s and large-scale prospecting in the following decades, the Emirates were united under the leadership and vision for the future of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the “Father of the Nation.”
In 2007 the NYU Abu Dhabi project was announced to be the first elite, comprehensive liberal arts, sciences, and engineering university in Abu Dhabi to be operated by a leading American research university. Today, NYU Abu Dhabi is an important part of a global NYU project.The modern campus opened in 2010 on Saadyiat Island, one of more than 200 in the country. It is home to nearly 2,000 students from more than 120 countries, 20% of them Emirati. The 120 languages spoken mirror the enormous diversity and the resulting sentiments and practices of inclusion, tolerance and equality.
It is very hot here. In the summer months, between May and September, temperatures reach almost 50 degrees Celsius along with high humidity indexes due to the proximity to the sea. In winter, so I heard, it is much more pleasant. Our life here, for now, has been mostly indoors, with freezing air conditioning: in our apartment on campus, in the University facilities, and in the numerous huge shopping malls.
I think of this warmth, however, also as a high degree of affection, humanism, and especially as a driving and motivating force for the great challenge that awaits us from now on.
