Centro de Arte Hélio Oiticica and SAARA Rio de Janeiro

Yesterday morning, I went to the opening of three wonderful exhibitions at Centro de Arte Hélio Oiticica, in Rio de Janeiro. With mostly works by young artists and carrying powerful political messages, they address important current issues, such as: police brutality and discrimination in Rio’s favelas; gentrification processes in the preparation for the Rio Olympics; and the aesthetics of contemporary popular urban culture in the city.

On my way back home, I passed through SAARA, a huge open-air commercial area in downtown Rio. I hadn’t been there for many years and was pleasantly surprised by how stimulating and sensorial an experience it still is to walk through the busy pedestrian streets, bustling with colours, sounds and smells.

In 2010, together with my colleague Paulo Marcos de Mendonça Lima, we edited the book “SAARA Rio de Janeiro”, with photographs by 12 artists (ISBN 978-85-89365-24-6). It has texts by Art Historian Paulo Sergio Duarte and myself, which can be read here:

And here are some images I took during my walk.

And some from 2009.
